making of an african christianA conversation with the Elders
For many, to be authentically "African" and "Christian" is impossible, since the 2 are viewed as possessing fundamentally incompatible worldviews. Frankly, this form of "schizophrenia" is emotionally, psychologically and spiritually exhausting, and it is undoubtedly one of the main reasons why African and African-American youth are questioning, and in many cases leaving the church altogether in large quantity. Sometimes it can feel a bit abstract when talking about African and African-American Christianity predominantly in conceptual terms. Consequently, in this retreat we want to connect concepts to the lived experiences of concrete human beings. We've invited 2 elders to tell the story of their respective journeys toward a healthy synthesis of these 2 identities. If you are interested, or even mildly curious as to what an African Christian expression of faith might look like in the 21st century, I urge you to join us!

"Far too often our African-American identity is like a side chick we have to leave at the door of the church before we can enter." - Clarence Hogan
